Intelastel and Google Data Studio

Introduction

Intelastel allows you to display a web page as a landing page. Using this, your Google Data Studio account, and Integromat, you will be able to build custom data dashboards as part of your no-code application design.

Requirements

  • Intelastel account and an application with data loaded, full admin permissions.
  • Google account to use Data Studio account. You need to have a Google account to use Data Studio, but you do not need to be signed in to view reports.
  • Familiarity with basic data modelling for your business purposes.
  • Integromat scenario with Intelastel modules.

Dependencies

  • Access to your data.
  • Permission to share data views with your Intelastel application users.
  • Data that can be visualised.

Method:

Google Data Studio calls sessions with your data “Reports”.

  1. Go to datastudio.google.com
  2. Add a new Blank report
  3. Click on “Unnamed Report” to give it a title.
  4. Click Add data to the report:
    a. Click Connect to data: Google Sheets
    OR
    b. Click My data sources: use your files
  5. Select a file.
  6. Click View to preview the dashboard.
    a. Click Edit to return to editing.
  7. You will see a pop-up asking you to confirm you want to add this data to the report, click OK
  8. You will see a basic table showing your raw data (here is some dummy accounts data to illustrate):
    a. There is a side-pane menu named Available fields. This shows you a list of fields. The headings correspond to the headers on the Google sheet/table you imported to the report.
    b. Drag and drop to manipulate the chart – you can scale and relocate it.
  9. Click Add a Chart from the top menu bar to open the palette menu where you can add different kinds of charts.
    a. These will be pre-filled with best-efforts guesses as to the appropriate data for that chart. You can then configure them to suit.
  10. Click Add a control from the top menu bar:
    a. Add a filter – this will allow the end user to select broad ranges of data to view.
    b. Add a menu – this will allow the end user to select granular data from a dropdown menu.
    c. Click Resource: Manage added data sources to add/edit further data sources.
  11. To enable the report to be viewed by others, click Share > Embed report
  12. Display in Intelastel:
    a. Simply copy the URL for the report, and add it as a landing page on your Intelastel application!
See this page of the User Guide for more information adding landing pages to your application.

N.b. you might need to configure sharing settings depending on who you want to see the data – select Find and View from the Google Data Studio sharing menu to allow anyone to see it, for example.

Customise the display:

Styling: Using the styling palette you can adjust colours, font, size etc.

Theme and Layout: You can customise every aspect of the styling of the report.

  • Click the Picture icon to add an image – via URL or from your computer.
  • Click the Text icon to add text.
  • Click the connectors and shapes icons to add shapes/links.
  • Click Add a page to show further information if needed.

Note: The report page can be made any size, so consider your display requirements when designing your layout.

Data loading method 1a – Intelastel to Data Studio:

Create an Integromat scenario that gets the values from the relevant entities whenever a record is updated or created:

In Integromat:
Add a Webhook to the start of an Integromat scenario. Copy the URL of the webhook.

In Intelastel:

Paste the webhook URL you copied into a Select Record EventFlow in your Intelastel application. Configure the Select Record event to view the data you wish to display in Data Studio.

In Integromat:
Add filters to the Integromat scenario to process the data as you see fit.

Add a Google Data Studio Update module to the scenario. Use your Google account connection to link it to your Google Data Studio account.

In Data Studio:
Add data source – Integromat.
Load the data and then choose how to display it as described above.

Data loading method 1b – Intelastel to Data Studio:

Create an Integromat scenario that periodically gets the values from the relevant entities by running the Intelastel Search module. This has the benefit of not having to wait for a record to be added for the dashboard to be updated:

In Intelastel:
Create your application and use it to generate records as you would normally.

In Integromat:
Add and configure an Intelastel Search module to the start of an Integromat scenario.
See this guide to using the Intelastel Integromat modules.
Schedule the scenario to run at appropriate intervals.

Data loading method 2 – Google Sheets:

Create a dedicated Google Sheet to hold snapshots of the data you wish to use in Google Data Studio.
Grant access to this sheet in Integromat.

In Integromat:
Add Update Sheet modules to your scenarios to update the Google Sheet with data from your Intelastel application.

In Data Studio:
Link to the Google Sheet to begin using the data.

Note this will not give a real-time display of data.
